Creation of an amphibian spawn pond
In September 2002, a local company was granted permission to dig out clay on the plots no. 582 and 583 (Viehweg zone) to produce plant soil; this excavation work will pierce the ground water level. The total project will last eight years. The idea is to design the area as an amphibian spawn pond to match the surrounding countryside. The excavation area is part of the local nature reserve and the “Stromberg-Vorland” district. This region and its surroundings provide habitats for a number of types of amphibians, the water and grass frog, common toad, mountain and pond newts, salamanders and also insects and birds. The removal of the clay meant that small ponds will be created. After each excavation phase, the holes will be partly refilled. In this way, spawn ponds are created. The most important protection measure for the ground water is achieved, thanks to the fact that the bottom of the ponds are max. 1 m below the original surrounding level. To protect the area from emissions, expanses of flat ground are planned and covering plants will be cultivated. This area, which serves to balance the regional mini climate will be optimised by the creation of further evaporation areas. The creation of the amphibian spawn ponds on the grounds of the company Ensinger Mineral-Heilquellen GmbH will improve the existing network of habitats in the region.
